The Greatest Footballer of all Time!

I wasn't fortunate enough to watch Pele, Johan Cruyff or even Diego Maradona in their prime. But if Lionel Messi is not the greatest footballer of all times, he is surely the greatest of our generation!

The fate of an entire footballing nation (some 43 million people) rested on this small man's shoulders. I stayed awake all night (due to south American timing), just to witness what could be the one of the greatest upsets in football history.

Argentina needed to win against Ecuador, plus a favourable result elsewhere in order to qualify for the world cup. It was a make-or-break encounter, as Argentina had only won once at that ground. The whistle was blown... Argentina conceded a goal just 1 minute into the encounter... Tension was high!

Then stepped in Lionel Messi! The captain sweated, defended, passed, dribbled, shouted orders, and gave his all for his country.

It was a performance that nearly brought tears to my eyes. I silently prayed for them. Upon all the attacking talents at their disposal, Argentina seem to be the most disjointed of all the big teams. There's no link between midfield and attack, and their abysmal showings throughout the qualification campaign left them on the brink of disqualification...

GOAAAAAAL.... IT'S LIONEL MESSI. (Argentina have equalised it's 1-1).
GOAAAAAAL... IT'S LIONEL MESSI AGAIN. (Argentina are leading by 2-1).
GOAAAAAL.... OH MY WORD! WHAT A GOAL BY LIONEL MESSI!

Surely, Argentina are going to the world cup after the initial scare, courtesy of a Lionel Messi hatrick!
He dragged his unconvincing national team almost single-handedly into Russia 2018.

A convincing performance by a man who is hated and loved by equal measures. A man who has been an epitome of individual brilliance since he was 12.

Argentina's problems still remain, and I can't see them winning the 2018 world cup, but surely, they'll be glad they have arguably the greatest footballer ever.
